Durante años, se ha acusado a los productores de no dedicar tiempo suficiente en la búsqueda de signos apropiados de celo durante la detección del mismo. Sin embargo, hemos demostrado en varios estudios que alrededor del 50% de las vacas no muestran comportamiento de quietud en el celo. Siendo este el factor que define al estro, esto implicaría que el 50% de las vacas no estarían en celo. Debido a que estos animales ovulan y pueden ser inseminados satisfactoriamente, se necesita otra manera de predecir el momento de la ovulación. En base a la frecuencia de signos de celo durante el estro y el diestro hemos desarrollado un sistema de detección visual que ha sido validado y ofrece oportunidades de para una mayor investigación (van Eerdenburg et al., 1996). Con este sistema, la intensidad de comportamiento de celo puede ser expresada numéricamente en vacas individuales a nivel de rodeo. Otra forma de detectar vacas en celo, es medir la actividad con podómetros. Normalmente, éstos son leídos durante el ordeño. Se puede ajustar las pautas para detectar más vacas. Sin embargo, la disminución de los umbrales de detección también incrementa el número de falsos positivos. Además, debido a que los podómetros son leídos en la sala de ordeñe, existe un lapso de tiempo (de aproximadamente 8 horas) entre el momento de actividad máxima y su registro. Por lo tanto existe una dificultad para inseminar al momento correcto. Recientemente hemos llevado a cabo un experimento con podómetros que registran la actividad en un período de 2 horas. De esta manera se pueden mejorar las tasas de detección y la precisión. Además, de esta forma se puede determinar el momento de máxima actividad. Combinando los datos del podómetro con la historia de la vaca, se puede mejorar aún más la precisión en la detección de celo. Finalmente, para un servicio exitoso no sólo es importante detectar vacas en celo correctamente, sino que también es crucial el intervalo entre la inseminación y la ovulación. Por tanto, la detección de celo significa “detección del momento de la ovulación”.
